Floodgate – exploration of a voronoi landscape

The aim of this project is to create an artificial hybrid landscape that transforms this important node in Gothenburg, currently inhabited by many barriers and unclear desire lines, into one where nature, infrastructure and architecture intertwine. Defined only by the topography of its terrain and built on the idea of an Hydrosocial system, it interconnects people and water, raising awareness of this important resource.   

The Hydrosocial system is based on a cascading water system that centres around the experience, visibility, and use of water in different stages of the water chain. The landscape works as a sponge that collects, cleans, and makes use of rainwater, while protecting the area from potential flooding.   

The terrain is a synergy between ruled-based and organic features. The structure is organized as a pixelated skeleton based on the voronoi structures present in nature. The voronoi modules are assigned a surface which interact with water in different ways, and results in variety within the landscape. This project is a way of wrapping, merging, and exposing infrastructure, architecture and nature into one connected hybrid landscape.

The aim of the design is to form a continuous landscape that is allowing for uninterrupted flows, by creating an interweaving global network of human and water pathways.  

The aim is also to create a local system of cells, which will function as a more intimate recreational space where commuters are invited to sit down, relax, and experience the water more closely. Each cell is thus subdivided into a second hierarchy of voronoi cells. These are then extruded in height, becoming assigned with different functions such as benches, roofings, water bowls, planters, walls and columns - creating varieties of nooks and crannies that can be used to enjoy and experience water in an otherwise hectic area. 

By applying the procedure to existing context, it creates a landscape that truly improves the lives of the citizens, by bridging over barriers, creating new ways of water resilience and hydrosocial experiences. 

Housing Units – Life Underground

Housing units – life underground is an exploration of the voronoi terrain from the project Floodgate as an extruded mass. How does architecture look like when it emerges from digging shapes out of the ground? What new opportunities does that create in dealing with infrastructure, both horizontal and vertical movement, food production and water management in urban spaces? On the surface of the terrain, stormwater collects and flows in small canals, entering the ground and the local water system, providing the units with usable water. A mix of soft and hard uneven textures create pathways, gardens, and cave-like spaces on all sides of the landscape.  

Drottningtorget Culture House

The main purpose of the project is to focus on the social aspect of the statement. Studying the site and how to provide something that it lacks, leads to the construction of a cultural house in Drottningtorget.   

The terrain is raised to create an indoor space which holds the Culture House. The darkest modules of the Voronoid structure will be used for rehearsal and recording studios, while the brighter ones will house reading and drawing rooms and a dance hall, leaving free spaces to develop creativity and raise awareness of the importance of water as a resource and experience. 

The building is oriented in a way that follows and enhances the desire lines and water paths of Drottningtorget, thereby creating a natural extension of the terrain, with a constant interaction between the exterior and interior spaces, connecting people water and nature.  

Drottningtorget Stormwater Park 

Magnus Nyström Lindé

Facing future scenarios of extreme weather conditions with heavy rainfall and floding, the ambition of transforming Drottningtorget into a Stormwater Park is to reintroduce nature to an urban setting exploring possible ways of dealing with water.. By combining it with human infrastructure, it can become a quality to experience the rainy weather of Gothenburg.  

 

Drottningtorget Stormwater Park acts as a hybrid landscape designed for both water and human to let people reconnect with nature and experience water at the very entrance of Gothenburg, not only making it a node for travelers but a recreational place to visit.
